For more information call the Resource Center at 452-4440. HOUSTON, Minn. The Houston School Board and its teachers Wednesday will try, in a fifth mediation session, to resolve their 10-month teacher salary dispute.

Meanwhile, an April 19 Houston County District Court date has been set to hear the Houston Education Association's $100,000 lawsuit against the school board for the board's alleged failure to negotiate in good faith. The mediation session, scheduled for 7 p.m. at the high school, will be the first meeting between the two sides in months. Houston teachers have been working without a contract since September. Houston Superintendent Lloyd Johnson said Wednesday that about $430 stands between the two sides and an agreement.

The current salary dispute is the longest since the 1977-78 school year when the teachers worked the entire year without a contract. An agreement was finally reached June 15, 1978. For Johnson, who has begun work on the district's 1984-85 budget, the dispute has made district financial projections little more than guesswork. know threequarters of our expenditures but the largest expense we have is teacher salaries and that makes budgeting next year difficult," he said. "Next year, the biggest concern is what kind of balance we'll have.

You assume what the figures are going to be but you don't really know." Based on six percent, or $1,135 salary increases per year for each of the two years, Johnson figured the district this year would spend down its June 30; 1983 unappropriated fund balance of $281,776 by $34,032. If the board were to grant $1,500 salary increases, the district would deficit spend to the tune of $55,000. Since the board rejected tentative $2,135 or 12 percent salary and fringe benefit offer made to the teachers by a negotiating committee in September, the two sides have been far apart. Currently, they appear as close to reaching an agreement as. they have been since last fall.

The teachers have proposed salary increases and $330 in insurance coverage. The board's last unofficial offer was $2,500. Teacher spokesman Mike Markegard said Wednesday that morale among teachers in the district is lower than it's ever been including the week of the 1982 strike. 'Our offer was reasonable, below the state average and they have the money so there is no reason why we should not have a contract," he said. The Houston Education Association's lawsuit against the board followed the teachers' unsuccessful motion in December for a temporary injunction.

The injunction would have forced the board to abide by the terms of the tentative contract settlement last September. Although the motion was denied by Judge Lawrence Collins, the judge said he would hear the suit, which charges the board with damages to the teachers' association because of unfair labor practices. of Hunting For Bargains in Spring Clothing?
