(AP) Jim Mchit Tim Wrightman with a 7-yard scoring pass for the only touchdown and Kevin Butler kicked four field goals, while the Chicago Bears' defense shut down the high -powered Jets offense in a 19-6 National Football League victory over New York Saturday. The victory for the 14-1 Bears was built on a rugged defense which forced three fumbles and didn't allow the Jets to get untracked. The Bears also were helped by a chilling wind, which whipped up to 28 mph. The defeat, the Jets' first loss at home this season, dropped their record to 10-5.

The Jets still can clinch a playoff spot with a victory over Cleveland at home next Sunday. Chicago already has clinched home field advantage throughout the National Conference playoffs. Walter Payton, the NFL's all-time leading rusher, was held below 100 yards for the first time in 10 weeks, gaining 53 yards on 28 carries. But he played a pivotal role with a 65-yard pass reception in the third quarter which led to a field goal. Butler, who has kicked 14 straight field goals on the road, hit from 21, 18, 37 and 31 yards.

A turnover that counted and one which didn't played a major role in the outcome. John Elway, victimized by five interceptions, rallied to complete three key passes on a drive in the closing minutes and Sammy Winder dove one yard for a touchdown as the Denver Broncos kept their slim National Football League playoff hopes alive with a 14-13 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs Saturday. The victory raised Denver's record to 10-5 and, coupled with the New York Jets' 19-6 loss to Chicago, kept Denver in the playoff picture. Kansas City fell to 5-10.

An interception by Chiefs' cornerback Albert Lewis, his second of the game, set up Todd Blackledge's 7- yard touchdown pass to Stephone Paige with 6:59 left, putting the Chiefs ahead 13-7. Denver had two subsequent series in which to reclaim the lead. Elway completed five passes on a drive: that reached the Chiefs' 8-yard line with 2:30 left before rookie running back Steve Sewell fumbled a pitchout and the Chiefs' Calvin Daniels recovered. (AP) Roger Maris will be buried in Fargo, where he began to hone his baseball skills that launched him into major league stardom. Maris, 51, died Saturday of cancer at a Houston hospital. Funeral sevices are scheduled to be held in at noon Thursday at St. Mary's Cathedral, according to Larry Boulger of Boulger Funeral Home in Fargo. Burial services will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

The former baseball great was born Sept. 10, 1934 in. Hibbing, Minn. Kansas City was forced to punt on its next series, and Elway, booed by the hometown crowd, went to work again. His 42-yard pass to Steve Watson moved Denver to the Kansas City 17.

Seven plays later, Winder went over the top for the tying TD with 22 seconds left in the game, and Rich Karlis produced the margin of victory with his extra point. (AP) Pain has been part of the game plan this season for Green Bay and Detroit quarterbacks and it will be no different when the Lions host the Packers in National Football League action today. A gimpy Eric Hipple will start at quarterback for the Lions, 7-7, but may not finish. If he goes down again, veteran Joe Ferguson will have to take over.

The Packers, now 6-8 and a full game behind the Lions in the Central Division of the National Football Conference, will start Jim Zorn, in place of veteran Lynn Dickey. Dickey had to be scratched from last week's game with the Miami Dolphins after he suffered back spasms while working out in the weight room. Zorn stepped in on short notice and completed 20 of 35 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns. Four of those passes were to James Lofton for 91 yards. The display chronicles his career from grade school in Fargo to his final years of major league baseball. For the past two years, Maris has allowed his name to be used in a benefit golf tournament in Fargo that features some of his former major league teammates. Boyd Christenson, publicity director for the golf tournament and a high school friend of Maris', said next summer's tournament would be held as a memorial tournament to Maris. Maris is survived by his wife, Patricia; six children, Susan, Roger Kevin, Randy, Richard and Sandra; his parents, Rudy and Corine Maris; and a brother, Rudy Maris, Boulger said. All are from Gainesville, he said.
