There is another complication. 1 I 1 jfgallg l0 1 I 1 go unnoticed until engine damage is extensive. Except in extreme cases, engine deterioration caused by late timing is slower and more insidious than that caused by early timing and detonation. I have explained before how late timing causes exhaust valve failures and poor gasoline mileage. -The effect of late ignition timing is cumulative. The relationship between the time ignition occurs (spark plug fires) and the time burning is completed is not linear or "straight line." Expressed another way, the correspondence between the two times is not "one-to-one." I'll try to explain.

Between the time the spark plug fires and the time the flame actually starts moving across the combustion chamber, the crankshaft may turn more than ten degrees. From then on, the rate of flame travel increases progressively principally because the length of the circular flame "front" is increasing and because the unburn ed charge is being compressed to burn even faster. This is true only if the flame gets a good start before the piston has traveled far in the expansion (power) stroke. Unless burning is Get Your Pyke Von Haden LATE IGNITION TIMING The article on early ignition timing may have left you with the impression that only that type must be avoided. Early timing, if it causes severe detonation, certainly must be avoided.

Such detonation will destroy an engine eventually. But, fortunately, it seldom goes unnoticed very long. Only a driver who lacks completely a mechanical "ear" will delay correcting its causes. Late ignition timing, on the other hand, may go unnoticed for a long time. If it is only a few degrees late, if the engine normally has surplus power, if the transmission is automatic, and if no check of gasoline mileage is made, it may Democrat Asks Halt of Runaway Installment Credit WASHINGTON Lfl Discounting Republican prosperity claims Sen.

Mansfield (D-Mont) called on the Eisenhower administration today to take immediate steps to control what he termed ''runaway installment credit." AThe handwrting is on the wall, he said in an interview. "The Eisenhower administration must improve strict credit regulations as soon as possible. If new legislation is needed, Congress 6hould provide it." Mansfield said he would favor credit regulations requiring one-third down and 18 months to pay the balance on major consumer durable goods such as automobiles and television sets.
